THE BIG PICTURE
As a part of a close knit team, I designed a cohesive series of global marketing materials for their Spring 2017 launch of the Surface Laptop device.
One season,
two campaigns
100+
assets created, from social posts to multi-asset retailer webpages.
Retail therapy
Worked closely with the client to produce product pages for Amazon and Best Buy.
5
team members, including design, copy, project management, and account services.
9 months
intermittently in a small room with one other (totally awesome) designer. Bonding moments due to a non-disclosure agreement: priceless!
Social is everything
A large part of Surface's marketing effort was put towards reaching the millenial audience. To do this, they placed a heavy emphasis on social media marketing. Utilizing their beautfil imagery, our team made a large series of media for both Twitter and Facebook. We also made banner ads in a variety of sizes.
Collaborating
with Retailers
A unique challenge of this project was designing layouts and preparing assets for retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. Each retailer has its own specifications and preferences for how they market devices. Our designs were used as recommendations for the retailers on how to lay out their pages. Knowing that they did not have follow our recommendations verbatim lit special motivation in the team to make these assets as easy-to-use and understand as possible.
WHAT I LEARNED
This project added a lot of items to my "things I never thought I'd be designing" list. For example: Banner ads are not a designer's dream task, nor did I ever consider the design effort behind them. However, during this project these ads but they recieved the same level of attention and rounds of iteration that the product pages recieved. It was the perfect example that good design can be applied anywhere. And now I can firmly say I've made some truly beautiful banners!
This project was a success because of the high level of collaboration and flexbility our team was able to achieve. Working on NDA projects brings a special level of stress but also excitement to the team. This excitment drove our little group to truly share one mind when it came to designing and delivery, which made for work that our agency still regualry shares with potential clients today.
